EC3 Tool Demo &

EPD Discussion

Tues. Nov. 26th, 6-9pm
@ DIALOG Office

EC3 (Embodied Carbon Construction Calculator) is a highly anticipated open-source tool for architects, engineers, owners, construction companies, building material suppliers and policymakers to compare and reduce embodied carbon emissions from construction materials.

It aggregates publicly available Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) data, enabling users to compare the embodied carbon impacts from different manufacturers within common construction material categories such as concrete, steel, wood, and insulation.

The EC3 tool is developed by Skanska USA and C-Change Labs, in partnership with the Carbon Leadership Forum and over 30 industry partners. It will be launching to the public on November 19th at GreenBuild conference in Atlanta, a few days prior to this ECN Vancouver event. We are excited to welcome Phil Northcott from C-Change Labs, the software developer behind EC3, to come give a demo of this tool and answer questions.

Afterward the EC3 demo and Q&A, we will dive into a group discussion around how we can incorporate this EPD information to inform our material/product choices in the design of our buildings. Morgan McDonald from Ledcor will offer some brief thoughts and questions to set up our group discussions.

Thank you to our sponsor DIALOG, who will be hosting us in their office and provide snacks and refreshments for the event.

Learn more about EC3 in this Press Release. Register for free access to EC3 tool after public launch on November 19th through the buildingtransparency.org website.

About ECN Vancouver

We organize local events that empower industry professionals
to champion the topic of embodied carbon on their projects and within their firms.

Historically, the building industry has mostly ignored the topic of embodied carbon, even though it will account for almost half of total emissions from new construction between now and 2050. This is why we urgently need to bring together all relevant stakeholders involved in the design and construction of buildings to focus on reducing embodied carbon.

Who attends our events? Architects, Structural Engineers, LEED / LCA / Energy Modelling Consultants, Developers, Contractors, Product Suppliers, Policymakers, and anyone else interested in embodied carbon. Our events are interactive. While we have informative presentations at our events, we also focus on facilitating engaging discussions amongst our attendees.

Our aim is to build up local industry capacity to address embodied carbon by connecting local professionals, sharing best practices, and tackling topics/initiatives that enable us to reduce embodied carbon at scale.

Note that we were formerly known as the Embodied Carbon Catalyst. We are now proud to become a local chapter of the Embodied Carbon Network, which is a network of 500+ members from 20+ countries focused on reducing and ultimately phasing out emissions from building and construction materials. This network has many of the leading experts around the world who are addressing embodied carbon within the building industry. You can sign up for free to join this group, where there are very active online discussions on a range of embodied carbon topics. It has been described as "Google Search" for embodied carbon, as there is a wealth of information on embodied carbon contained in the online discussions.
